Title: The Dialog with MLA/NLM Leadership: NLM Relationships with the Private Sector, 1982
Occasion: Presented at the Medical Library Association's Annual Meeting, Anaheim, Calif.
MMC Commentary: I took this opportunity to eulogize my Deputy Director at the NLM, Mr. Scott Adams, and to remind the medical library community of the great advances made by my predecessor, Dr. Frank P. Rogers, who created MEDLARS with his Deputy Director Scott Adams. I reviewed the progress made since 1965 when the library acquired its authority to make grants. I also pointed out the census of the time and told them the National Library of Medicine provided considerable money for the Medical Library Assistance Act. These funds were used for support in the training of medical librarians and were also used for construction and renovation of libraries. They were used for the creation of new research activities, including the application of computer and communication technologies to advance medical library services in the U.S. The Medical Library Assistance Act also was used to create the medical library network, which remains in operation today. I closed my speech in a somewhat different configuration by paying tribute to my colleague of 17 years, Dr. Joseph Leiter, who became an outstanding Director of Library Operations, although his professional background had been in the field of biochemistry. The relationships between MLA and NLM vacillated from time to time, and I used this occasion to try to cement the relationship and reduce any tension that sometimes may have existed. There is a lectureship named in Dr. Leiter's honor. It serves to bring together the Medical Library Association and the National Library of Medicine, and it offers a forum for announcing new and important advances in the field of librarianship. I regret that Dr. Leiter died in 2005. I wrote the obituary.
