Title: The U.S. National Library of Medicine: A National Resource Serving International Needs, 1979
Occasion: Presented at the Rockefeller Foundation Conference, "Quality-Based Libraries for Medical Schools in Less Developed Countries," Bellagio, Italy.
MMC Commentary: This paper was presented at a small conference sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, which had a deep interest in medical information and medical communications. An NLM librarian had attended the First Conference on the subject and the Library was also represented by Davis McCarn, Deputy Director of the Lister Hill Center for Biomedical Communications. My talk attempted to outline all of the library services that were available to the developing countries of the world and made suggestions of how comparable services could be provided on a regional basis. I used as example, the development of the Regional Medical Library of the Pan-American Health Organization which was established Sao Paulo, Brazil, and now serves as a library resource for all of Latin America.
