Title: Gold-Headed Cane as a Symbol of Continued Medical Education, 1972
Occasion: Presented at the Honors Convocation, University of Texas Medical Center Branch School of Medicine.
MMC Commentary: I made this presentation to a select group of students and faculty. The gold-headed cane was a symbol of good medical practice in ancient England. The history of the gold-headed cane is given within the text. I suggested that we have some such symbol for the outstanding teachers, researchers, and practitioners of medicine in the United States.
