MMC Commentary: In this article I applaud the work of Stearns and Ratcliff's core list of the minimal number of books, journals and reference books created for hospital libraries for the needs of the practitioner in his medical searching to solve medical problems. I also caution that libraries should not be rigid in their collections and should be aware of the technological and bibliographic advances of the National Library of Medicine.
