Title: Dr. John Shaw Billings and the American Climatological Association, 1968
Occasion: Presented after dinner at the 81st meeting of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, Fontana, Wis., October 15, 1968. Published in Transactions of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, 80 (1969): 151-164.
MMC Commentary: This paper details the accomplishments of Dr. John Shaw Billings. I find the most important part of this paper for historical purposes are the pictures of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1890 that was designed by John Shaw Billings, who also served as a medical consultant to the Johns Hopkins Hospital to which Billings recruited Drs. William Osler and William H. Welch to its first faculty; a picture of the octagon ward at Johns Hopkins Hospital; the reading room and stacks of the Army Medical Library, Washington, D.C., about 1890; a portrait of John Shaw Billings; a picture Dr. Abraham Jacobi; Dr. Billings' sketch of a plan of the New York Public Library; and a picture of Dr. William Pepper, Provost and Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the second president of the American Climatological Association.
