Title: The Changing Character of the National Library of Medicine, 1965
Occasion: Presented at the Wellcome Library, London, England.
MMC Commentary: The Wellcome Library was founded on the collections formed by Henry Solomon Wellcome, whose personal wealth, founded on the pharmaceutical company that he developed and owned, allowed him to spend the last four decades of his life indulging one of the most ambitious collecting visions of the twentieth century. I singled out to compliment the Wellcome catalogs of manuscripts of incunabula and of printed books through 1640, particularly the "Current Work in the History of Medicine." I also complimented Dr. Poynter's role in organizing the annual conference on history of medicine in Britain.
