Unpublished Manuscripts (Q Files),
1941-2005 [subseries]: The Unpublished Manuscripts sub-series (Q Files) contains Lederberg's unpublished manuscripts, speeches, and articles.
Subject numbers are Q1 to Q221. Please note that the number sequence is not complete. There are fifteen folders that were never assigned numbers; these folders are organized alphabetically by subject. Contents within all folders were kept in original order.
Particular attention should be paid to the material from folder "Q4; Preservation of Bacterial Cultures on Silicagel, Circular (1952)." Lederberg experimented with methods of preservation for bacterial specimens sent through the mail. Accompanying copies of Lederberg's proposed circular are mailed examples of dried cultured samples. These samples and all the material related to them have been treated and preserved by a professional conservator and are now considered to be safe for use.
