Series 7: Writings, 1936-2007 [series]:

The Writings Series contains the numerous reprints, reports, and articles written by Lederberg and many of his colleagues. Originally created as a method of providing easy access to his varied writing projects, the organization scheme for the series consists of five sub-series: Published Writings (P Files), Unpublished Manuscripts (Q Files), Published Reports (R Files), Science and Man (SAM Files) and Temporary (T Files).

Each sub-series follows a numerical organizational system designed by Lederberg. Folders are assigned a designated number that usually relates to a specific subject. Document types included in the sub-series are publications, audio/video tapes, reports, speeches, photographs, reprints, manuscripts, peer reviews, correspondence, notes, transcripts, and articles.

Published Writings (P Files), 1936-2006 [subseries]:

The Published Writings sub-series (P Files) contains Lederberg's published writings and the background research material for each piece. The sub-series contains the majority of Lederberg's published scientific research, as well as a wide variety of published works in many of the disciplines Lederberg was involved with including exobiology, computer science, and biological warfare. Researchers can find many of Lederberg's articles based on his groundbreaking and Nobel Prize-winning research, which appear in the early numbered files. Please note that the number sequence is not complete. Computer Disk A, Disk A1 and Disk B contain bibliographic lists of the contents of several P Files folders.

P209 [subseries]:

P209 was a project that began at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavior Science in Stanford, CA. CASBS had a unique opportunity for scholars, the Program on Science, Technology and Society (POSTS), to collaborate on a year-long project. For the academic year 1973-1974, JL was a POSTS fellow at the Center, where he worked primarily with the sociologists of science Harriet Zuckerman (HAZ) and Robert Merton (RKM). Yehuda Elkana and Arnold Thackray were also members of this group. The five came together to study the broad category of the historical sociology of science, and RKM drew up a comprehensive list of the different projects which the group would cover during the year. This document is entitled "Historical Sociology of Science: A POSTS group, 1973-74" and it is contained in a file of the same name. This file can be found with the CASBS/POSTS files.

This sub-series contains many drafts and states of proof of the manuscript on which JL, HAZ and RKM collaborated. Although it was never published in its entirety, their work led to two publications: Joshua Lederberg. "Forty Years of Genetic Recombination in Bacteria: A Fortieth Anniversary Reminiscence." Nature 324:627-628 (1986.) [P266] and Harriet Zuckerman and Joshua Lederberg. "Forty Years of Genetic Recombination in Bacteria. Post-Mature Scientific Discovery?" Nature 324:629-631 (1986.) [P267]. These were the two substantive publications which resulted from the work of JL and HAZ, but there are other publications tangentially related to the topic which are scattered throughout the files.

Also included is work on pre- and post-mature discovery, the topic on which JL and HAZ ultimately published papers. These files contain notes, research on scientific examples which fulfilled the criteria of pre- or post-mature discovery and correspondence between JL and HAZ.

Lastly are some miscellaneous background material and a number of files on the examination of scientific disciplines, part of a small project which JL worked on with Arnold Thackray.

Unpublished Manuscripts (Q Files), 1941-2005 [subseries]:

The Unpublished Manuscripts sub-series (Q Files) contains Lederberg's unpublished manuscripts, speeches, and articles.

Subject numbers are Q1 to Q221. Please note that the number sequence is not complete. There are fifteen folders that were never assigned numbers; these folders are organized alphabetically by subject. Contents within all folders were kept in original order.

Particular attention should be paid to the material from folder "Q4; Preservation of Bacterial Cultures on Silicagel, Circular (1952)." Lederberg experimented with methods of preservation for bacterial specimens sent through the mail. Accompanying copies of Lederberg's proposed circular are mailed examples of dried cultured samples. These samples and all the material related to them have been treated and preserved by a professional conservator and are now considered to be safe for use.

Published Reports (R Files), 1947-2005 [subseries]:

The Published Reports sub-series (R Files) contains reports and background research from scientific commissions on which Lederberg served. He was not, however, the sole author of these reports. The R Files sub-series follows a numerical organizational system. Please note that the number sequence is not complete. Documents were kept in original order.

Science and Man (SAM Files), 1949-2004 (bulk 1962-1988) [subseries]:

The Science and Man sub-series (SAM Files) contains Lederberg's non-technical writings and opinion pieces from a variety of publications. The articles in the SAM Files sub-series are unique. They are not in Lederberg's usual technically analytical style. He wrote the majority of the articles and speeches for the general public and their contents are reflective of the sometimes-turbulent 1960s. In his articles written for the Washington Post, Lederberg addressed such timely issues as women's health, the biology of race and intelligence, genetic manipulation, biological/chemical warfare, and religion verses science. Many of the articles still resonate with political and social significance.

The SAM Files sub-series follows a numerical arrangement. Please note that the number sequence is not complete. Folders 1 through 232 consist of the complete series of weekly columns written for the Washington Post between July 24, 1966 and September 12, 1971. Folders 233 to 339 consist of articles and speeches written for a variety of different organizations and publications. The last portion of the sub-series is not numbered and the folders are labeled as background files. These files contain correspondence from several newspapers and readers (commentary, questions, requests); they also contain the original final manuscripts for the Washington Post series. Documents were kept in original order.
