The origins of the Public Health Service hospital system date to the passage in 1798 of the law creating the Marine Hospital Fund to care for merchant seamen. Contained herein are materials on the history of the Public Health Service hospitals and their administration. Included are the history files for each hospital maintained by the Division of Hospital's Information Office as well as documents relating to the conversion or closure of each hospital; program files, reports, and planning documents on the hospitals and the medical care of seamen; and administrative documents, circular letters, and manuals used by the hospitals.
