Summary Information

Title: Louis W. Sullivan papers
Creator: Sullivan, Louis Wade, 1933-
Extent: 163.5 Linear Feet (122 boxes + 100 framed items)
Location: Materials stored onsite. History of Medicine Division. National Library of Medicine
Primarily consists of the daily record of Dr. Sullivan's term as Secretary of Health and Human Services 1989-1993 -- correspondence, Sec. Action Files, White House reports, Secretary's Green Sheets, VHS tapes of topical news clips and appearances. Also includes materials related to his post DHHS career as a health advocate for minority populations in the U.S. and abroad, and as a corporate advisor. Large number of framed awards, photographs, diplomas, and certificates. Of note are materials related to his two Africa trips to investigate the AIDS crisis for the Bush/Quail Presidency prior to his becoming Sec. DHHS. Materials not collected include his medical career at Boston University and Morehouse College of Medicine and his civic life in Atlanta. Local Atlanta repositories such as the Woodruff Library and Atlanta History Center received much of these materials, including 3-D realia, plaques, and awards. Challenging for users: files sometimes organized in reverse chronological order and filed backwards; sublime to the mundane everyday usually filed side-by-side in chron files - no topical/thematic organization.
