Biographical Note

Hecquet received his early medical education at Rheims and initially practiced in his home town of Abbeville, France. In 1697 he earned his M.D. at the Faculte de Medecine de Paris, which selected him as a doyen in 1712. Hecquet was involved in the medical debate over the causes of digestion. Some maintained it was a chemical process while others, including Hecquet, believed it to be a mechanical one. He delineated his position in the 1712 publication Traite de digestion.
