Biographical Note

Though born in Maryland, John E. Gillespie, joined a Pennsylvania regiment to serve in the Civil War. After the war, he earned a medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Navy as an assistant surgeon in 1868. He was stationed at the Navy Yard in Mare Island, CA where he became surgeon on the U.S.S. Mohican. In August 1870, while in Panama, Gillespie contracted malaria. He died in Philadelphia.
