Artificial collection of primarily secondary research materials and
photocopies of originals from the Rockefeller Archive Center assembled by Avery's colleague Joshua
Lederberg. Avery's career focused on a "systematic effort to understand the biological activities of
pathogenic bacteria through a knowledge of their chemical composition," focusing most of his
research on a single species of pneumococcus, Diplococcus pneumoniae. The collection falls roughly
into two parts: items related to the discovery of the transforming principle and items related to
