Series I: Personal and Biographical, 1904-2007 [series]:

The Personal and Bographical series documents Dr. Lederberg's personal life. The series provides insight into Lederberg's professional, and to a lesser extent, personal development. The bulk of the material covers his education, awards he received (particularly, the Nobel Prize), autobiographies, and biographical information.

The series is divided into six sub-series: Address Cards, Awards and Honors, Bibliographical Material, Biographical and Autobiographical Material, Clippings and Reprints, and Education. Document types found in the series include correspondence, publications (articles, reprints), notebooks, notes, application forms, memoranda, manuscripts, and governmental documents. In each sub-series some documents were left in original order, while other documents were assigned an order by the archivist.

I.1 Address Cards, n.d.

The Address Cards sub-series contains a group of alphabetized index cards with the addresses of Lederberg's numerous contacts. The cards are color coded to indicate whether the address was updated. The cards are undated and the accuracy of the individual addresses is unsubstantiated.

Folders are arranged alphabetically by card headings and documents were left in original order.

Series II: Academic Career, 1925-2005 (bulk 1947-1978) [series]:

The Academic Career Series contains material documenting Lederberg's long career in academia as both a professor and administrator, from his 1947 appointment as head of the genetics department at the University of Wisconsin, to his tenure as chairman of the genetics department at Stanford University and his term as president of Rockefeller University. The series reflects key moments in his career and provides information on the many organizations he belonged to throughout his life.

The series is divided into three sub-series: University of Wisconsin, 1947-1959; Stanford University, 1958-1978; and Rockefeller University, 1978-1990, 2005. Folders are arranged chronologically by sub-series, and within sub-series folders appear alphabetically by folder title. All folders follow this scheme except for those in the Rockefeller University sub-series. There the folders are arranged chronologically by sub-sub-series. Documents within folders are usually arranged in chronological order. Document types found in the series include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, grant proposals, applications, articles/clippings, notes, publications, and memoranda.

II.1 University of Wisconsin, 1947-1959, 1.12 linear feet

The University of Wisconsin sub-series contains material Lederberg collected during his tenure at that institution. Included is documentation on his participation in the development and eventual chairmanship of the Department of Medical Genetics at the University. Also documented is material concerning the controversy surrounding his hiring. A report from May 27, 1999 by Susan McDonough, a historian hired by Lederberg to document and organize his papers at Rockefeller University before they were donated to the National Library of Medicine, contains more information on Lederberg's controversial application to the University. The report is located in the appendix of this finding aid.

Campaign for Lederberg Chair, 2005

Series III: Correspondence, 1935-2008 [series]:

The Correspondence Series contains correspondence and memoranda spanning Dr. Lederberg's lifetime. The series is divided into eight sub-series designed by Lederberg. Each sub-series is defined by specific date parameters and identified by a two-letter indicator. There is one sub-series that is unlike the others. The Chronological sub-series contains copies of Lederberg's regular outgoing correspondence during the years he worked at Stanford University and Rockefeller University. The other sub-series are divided as follows: CA (1935-1947), CB (1947-1953), CC (1953-1960), CD (1961-1978), CE (1978-1985), CF (1985-1999), and CG (2000-2008).

The majority of the correspondence relates to Lederberg's professional career both in and outside of the academic field. There are some letters of a more personal nature from his childhood in both the CA and CD sub-series. Other subjects represented in the series include research, the Nobel Prize, and governmental committees and public service organizations. For further material on Lederberg's work with governmental and private organizations please consult Series VI: Public Service, which contains a great deal of information related to his work with biological and chemical warfare policies in both the public and private sectors.

Some material is restricted.

III.1 CA, 1935-1947

The CA sub-series documents Lederberg's childhood and academic studies, along with his initial studies in bacteria recombination.

The CA sub-series contains three chronological folders followed by a series of folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Organization within folders is chronological. While most individual folders relate to one correspondent (whether an individual or an organization), the three chronological folders are different. These are arranged by date and contain material from several different correspondents discussing career related matters. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, reports, notes, applications, photographs, and publications.

Material is in both English and French.

III.2 CB, 1947-1953

The CB sub-series documents Lederberg's early years at Wisconsin including his recruitment and his on-going experiments with genetics recombination in E. coli. Additional material on this topic can be found in the University of Wisconsin sub-series of Series II: Academic Career.

The CB sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Organization within folders is chronological. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, notes, manuscripts, and publications (articles and reprints). Material is in English, French, and German.

III.3 CC, 1953-1960

The CC sub-series documents Lederberg's role in creating the Department of Genetics at Stanford University and his receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1958.

The CC sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Organization within folders is chronological. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts, applications, photographs, publications (articles, clippings and reprints), recordings (vinyl), and notes. Material is in English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, German, and French, with translations provided for most of the foreign language documents.

III.4 CD, 1961-1978

The CD sub-series documents Lederberg's tenure at Stanford University and his eventual resignation. While the majority of the correspondence in this sub-series relates to Lederberg's career, material of a more personal nature can be found in the Seymour Lederberg folder.

The CD sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Documents were primarily left in original order. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts, reports, applications, notes and publications. Material is in English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian.

III.5 CE, 1978-1985

The CE sub-series covers Lederberg's early years as President of Rockefeller University.

The sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Documents were primarily left in original order. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, memoranda, notes, photographs, publications, and manuscripts.

III.6 CF, 1985-1999

The CF sub-series contains material documenting Lederberg's retirement as President of Rockefeller University in 1990. Much of the material continues the ongoing correspondence of colleagues, friends, students, and agencies from the private and public sectors as represented in other Correspondence sub-series.

The CF sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Organization within folders is chronological. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, reports, notes, applications, photographs, manuscripts, and publications (books, magazines, newspaper clippings). Material is in English and French.

III.7 CG, 2000-2008

The CG sub-series contains material that continues the ongoing correspondence of colleagues, friends, students, and agencies from the private and public sectors as represented in other Correspondence sub-series.

The sub-series is organized alphabetically by correspondent. Documents were left primarily in original order. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, and publications (articles, clippings, and reprints).

III.8 Chronological, 1960-1998

The Chronological sub-series comprises notebooks, kept by Lederberg, containing copies of his daily outgoing correspondence during the years he served as chairman of the Stanford University Genetics Department and as President of Rockefeller University.

Folders and are arranged in chronological order by year and month. Within each folder documents are arranged chronologically by date. Document types found in the sub-series include correspondence, notes, articles, memoranda, and manuscripts.
