Biographical NoteNew York City surgeon Henry Berton Sands, 1830-1888, graduated from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1854. He subsequently progressed there from assistant
demonstrator to professor of anatomy, finally becoming professor of the practice of surgery. Sands was one of the most renowned surgeons on the East coast.
Endowed by the Vanderbilt family in 1886, the Vanderbilt Clinic of the College of Physicians and Surgeons was constructed at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Sixtieth street in New York City. It was conducted by the College. The clinic opened in December 1887 providing for "the medical and surgical treatment of out-door patients, for the necessary accommodation of the clinical professors, and for all the general and special clinical instruction in the College."
